The American Society of Newspaper Editors praised the decision of a federal district judge in South Carolina who declared the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act on 1994 unconstitutional.

"The people’s right to know was protected by this decision," said Sandra Mims Rowe, editor of The Oregonian, Portland, and president of ASNE, which joined a half-dozen other news organization, led by the South Carolina Press Association, in challenging the driver’s act.

"We hope the decision will stop the enforcement of this measure in all the states," the ASNE president said.

Founded in 1922, ASNE is an organization of the main editors of daily newspapers in the United States and Canada. There are currently 875 members.
