Milton Coleman, deputy managing editor of The Washington Post, was elected treasurer-designate of the American Society of Newspaper Editors on Oct. 18, during the group's fall board meeting in Tacoma, Wash. Coleman will become treasurer of the group in March 2007 at the annual convention and will rise through the officer ranks each year until reaching the ASNE presidency in April 2010.

About his election to the ASNE ladder, Coleman said: “It is with great pride that I look forward to this important leadership role as the news industry tackles the critical challenges facing us. In newsrooms throughout the nation, we need rigorous defense of a free press, stronger journalism delivered in ways both old and new and increased diversity in an increasingly diverse world. There is also a powerful mandate for change, aggressive change, to deliver our journalism in the most effective and efficient manners. I am honored to serve in such exciting times.”

ASNE President David A. Zeeck, executive editor, The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash., said: "Milton's a great choice to lead ASNE because he's uniquely attuned to the major challenges now facing American journalism. He's among the top editors in one of the best newsrooms in America, a newsroom that's integrated with a leading-edge Web site as well as radio and television operations. He also has a major role in the Post's partnership with the Spanish-language newspaper El Tiempo Latino.

"Milton is living the future of news every day at work. That makes him the perfect choice to lead America's newsroom leaders."

Coleman joins Zeeck; Gilbert Bailon, publisher and editor, Al Día, Dallas, vice president; Charlotte H. Hall, editor, Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel, secretary; and W. Martin Kaiser, editor, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, treasurer, in ASNE's leadership.

ASNE, founded in 1922, with about 700 members, is the main organization of the directing editors of daily newspapers in the Americas. The organization is leading efforts to protect First Amendment rights and enhance the free flow of information, to promote the newspaper's role in providing information necessary to the informed practice of citizenship, to encourage innovation and celebrate creativity in newspapers and the new media environment, to drive the quest for diversity and inclusion in the workplace and news content, and to bolster media credibility and improve high school journalism.
