ASNE Reynolds Institutes create catalysts

Kent State graduate assistant Stacy Puzo baked this for the visiting teachers. But the fondant melted and the cake sagged, rendering it inedible. Fortunately, the program and the participants held up just fine.

In June and July, 175 teachers are becoming journalism missionaries by taking part in ASNE Reynolds High School Journalism Institutes. The two-week sessions are held at five accredited j-schools:

  • Arizona State University, Tempe, June 14-26
  • Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, July 5-17
  • University of Nevada, Reno, July 12-24
  • University of Missouri, Columbia July 12-24
  • University of Texas at Austin, July 19-31

Dozens of news organizations, ASNE members and their staffs play key roles in these two-week intensive training sessions, which are funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.

ASNE developed a 15-topic curriculum outline based on the core tenets of journalism and the skills needed to produce a top-notch teen publication, online or on paper. Each university's j-school adds its own expertise and creativity. And each teacher is provided with a free news Web site from ASNE, which is funded by the Knight Foundation.

Special thanks go to five editors who represented ASNE in kicking off each of the programs: Marty Kaiser at Arizona State, Mizell Stewart at Kent State, Ward Bushee at Nevada-Reno, Arnie Robbins at Mizzou and Jeff Cohen at UT.
