ASNE unveils 2018 schedule for Emerging Leaders Institutes

Mid-level news managers are encouraged to apply to one of four free leadership institutes

Columbia, Mo. (March 8, 2018) - The American Society of News Editors is accepting applications for the four Emerging Leaders Institutes, which will take place in various locations throughout the year, with the goal of training up-and-coming news leaders with diverse backgrounds, and helping them develop core leadership and strategic skills.

Mid-level managers from newsrooms of all platforms are welcome to apply to the specific institute of their choice to be considered.

Dates and locations are:

  • June 8-9 at Loyola University Chicago
  • July 17-18 at the Miami Herald prior to the NAHJ International Training Conference and Career Fair in Miami
  • July 31-Aug. 1 prior to the NABJ Annual Convention and Career Fair in Detroit
  • Sept. 9-10 prior to the ASNE-APME conference in Austin, Texas

This is the seventh consecutive year ASNE has committed to train the next generation of news leaders. The program will be led by ASNE President Alfredo Carbajal, managing editor of Al Día at The Dallas Morning News, and ASNE Leadership Committee Co-Chairs Manny Garcia, east region executive editor of the USA TODAY Network; Jill Geisler, Loyola's Bill Plante Chair in Leadership and Media Integrity; and Ron Smith, managing editor of news at USA TODAY. Other faculty members include Julie Moos, shared news director at McClatchy, and Mizell Stewart III, vice president of news operations for Gannett and the USA TODAY Network.

"Now more than ever, our newsrooms' leaders need to reflect all segments of society to procure a more comprehensive coverage," Carbajal said. "Diverse news leaders need also be engines of innovation and solutions to the challenges that we face. Our intent is to help to develop strong leaders to lead the journalism that our society needs."

"Every one of us on the Emerging Leaders faculty volunteers for one reason: We know that there are too few women and people of color in leadership roles in journalism," Geisler said. "By offering this training to up-and-coming managers from diverse backgrounds, we can help provide them the tools they need to lead and succeed, to create stronger newsroom cultures and to serve their communities."

The institutes will provide leadership and management training for emerging leaders from organizations across all news platforms in the United States. They are tailored to address the most pressing issues for newsroom leaders and the basic skills needed to lead and drive change. Some of the topics on the program include coaching and feedback, leadership style, news values in digital platforms and social media environments, goal-setting and strategy, financial leadership, design-thinking and innovation.

"These are turbulent times in our industry, and if we ever needed transformative leaders, it is now," Smith said. "Our goal is to empower emerging leaders to come back to their newsrooms inspired, informed and ready to proceed until apprehended."

All institutes are free and will provide some travel reimbursements. Selected candidates will receive an email with information on lodging and how to receive travel reimbursements.

Selected candidates and their supervisors will also be required to complete a pre-institute skills assessment form before participating in the program.

The American Press Institute, the Gannett Foundation and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation are generous sponsors of the 2018 Emerging Leaders Institutes.
