ASNE board elevates treasurer to secretary, elects new treasurer

Columbia, Mo. (Dec. 14, 2017) - The Board of Directors of the American Society of News Editors, during a board meeting on Tuesday, voted in favor of elevating the organization's current treasurer to the secretary position left vacant by Michael Oreskes' resignation and elected a board member to fill the resulting vacancy at the treasurer position.

George Stanley, editor and senior vice president of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the USA TODAY Network, and Manny García, east regional editor of the USA TODAY Network, will assume immediately the roles of ASNE secretary and treasurer, respectively, for the remaining 2017-18 term. At the September convention in Austin, Texas, they will each advance to the next leadership level. "George and Manny not only are great news editors, but also terrific leaders and promoters of talent and innovation in journalism," said ASNE President Alfredo Carbajal of Al Día at The Dallas Morning News. "They both bring experience and leadership to support and champion ASNE's mission to develop new leaders, fight for First Amendment and promote diversity in America's newsrooms."
Stanley, known as a persuasive, focused leader who cares deeply about quality journalism, oversees the news and opinion operations for the Journal Sentinel and serves as Gannett's regional editor for 10 additional Wisconsin markets, including the Green Bay Press-Gazette and the Appleton Post-Crescent. Before he became editor of the Journal Sentinel, Stanley was its managing editor from 1997 to 2015 during which he created and led the process for in-depth project journalism. Stanley studied journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The changes on the organization's leadership ladder leave an open position on the board. Carbajal will work with other board members to identify candidates, with one to be approved by the board in the next few weeks to fill that position.
One other member serving on ASNE's leadership, besides President Carbajal, Secretary Stanley and Treasurer García, is Vice President Nancy Barnes, editor and executive vice president of the Houston Chronicle.
Both Stanley and García spearheaded the 2016 and 2017 ASNE-IRE leadership workshops on how to lead investigative projects and teams. Stanley also has been co-chairing the ASNE Awards Committee since the 2017 contest, and García currently serves on the Leadership and Emerging Leaders Institute Committee.

García, who has an incredible track record for producing high-quality reporting, serving the community and mentoring future leaders in journalism, oversees 50-plus newsrooms from Florida to Vermont. He previously served as executive editor of the Naples Daily News, where he created an award-winning statehouse bureau, built an investigative team, diversified the newsroom, increased video storytelling and instituted staff training to learn the business, which has generated more than $500,000 in new revenue. García graduated from Florida International University.
