President Clinton teases William. A. Hilliard at the 1994 ASNE luncheon for top editors from around the country. Clinton observed that Hilliard's early childhood years in Arkansas seem to have done him no harm.

Former editor of The Oregonian, Hilliard was a longtime member of ASNE who served on the Board of Directors and various committees in the '80s and '90s. In 1993, he was the first black person to be elected president of the organization, known as the American Society of Newspaper Editors at the time.
