ASNE renews call for access to Supreme Court proceedings

Over the past few years, ASNE has repeatedly pressed for maximum access to Supreme Court proceedings, not just court records but the actual proceedings, especially oral arguments. On Friday, Feb. 26, ASNE joined nine other organizations in a letter to the court that requests same day access to audio of two oral arguments: Whole Woman's Health v. Cole and U.S. v. Texas. The former case, argued Wednesday, looked at a Louisiana law, which requires that a doctor at an abortion clinic has patient admitting privilege at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic. The latter case, for which an argument date has not been set, is a challenge to the constitutionality of the "Deferred Action for Parents of Americans" program.
Our letter argues that the issues in these cases, abortion and immigration, are of particular interest to millions of Americans and provide a particularly acute need for access to more than just a written transcript of the proceedings.
