On Tuesday, the Associated Press Media Editors named Wall Street Journal “Innovator of the Year” for its project “WSJ Start-Up of the Year.” In an innovative shift from the paper's usual demographic, the series pitted 24 entrepreneurs against each other for several weeks to earn the same title as the project itself.

The other finalists for the title were the Herald-Tribune of Sarasota, Fla. represented by Executive Editor Bill Church and The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch represented by Managing Editor Alan Miller. The former discussed his paper's focus on “watchdog journalism” and nontraditional financial partnerships. The latter emphasized the equal importance of print and innovation in newsrooms.

The representatives of each publication presented their paper's innovations in three 10-minute videos this morning. Conference attendees, including members of APME, the American Society of News Editors and Associated Press Photo Managers, voted for the most creative. WSJ generated the most support.
