And don't forget to  check out the fabulous Chicago restaurant guide prepared by the Chicago Tribune/Tribune Content Agency for attendees of ASNE-APME 2014. The Tribune is hosting our opening-night reception at Howells & Hood, a restaurant on the ground floor of Tribune Tower, and has been an amazing help. The guide features a mind-blowing list of restaurants suggested by Tribune restaurant critic Phil Vettel.

The conference will start at 1:30 p.m. CDT Monday, Sept. 15, and conclude at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17. Here are some highlights of the conference:

  • Kickoff session: Tom Rosenstiel, executive director of the American Press Institute, and Amy Webb, CEO of Webbmedia Group, will highlight the latest trends involving news audiences and emerging technology.
  • Opening-night reception/auction (Tribune Tower): Come eat, drink and spend your hard-earned money at our lively evening featuring members of the comedy group Second City and live and silent auctions. Thanks to the Chicago Tribune and Tribune Content Agency.
  • From online first to mobile first (Tuesday afternoon): Hear from a panel of nationally recognized experts who will discuss mobile-first and social-media trends, the competitive landscape and emerging best practices for news organizations of all sizes. Featuring: Max Zimbert, managing editor, Yahoo News Digest; Jodi Gersh, director of social media and engagement, Gannett; and David Ho, editor of mobile, tablets and emerging technology, The Wall Street Journal. Moderated by Sam Kirkland, digital media fellow, Poynter.
  • Tuesday-night entertainment: Join us for an evening cruise on the Mystic Blue or for the Chicago Cubs baseball game against the Cincinnati Reds (tickets sold out).
  • Women-at-the-top discussion (Wednesday morning): For decades, the predominance of white males in top editors' offices has been a topic of conversation and concern in the panel rooms, hallways and bars of journalism conferences. This year, with the high-profile ouster of the first female editor of The New York Times, those conversations went public, generating a lot of heat and at least a few rays of light. This panel, featuring three of the nation's most prominent women editors and a journalist focused on the issue of women in business leadership, will pick up these threads and move them forward. Featuring: Debra Adams Simmons of Advance Local, Kathleen Carroll of The Associated Press, Kathleen Davis of Fast Company and Aminda Marques Gonzalez of the Miami Herald. Moderated by: Geneva Overholser, senior fellow, Center for Communication Leadership and Policy at the USC Annenberg's School for Communication and Journalism.

  • First Amendment luncheon (Wednesday closure): James Risen of The New York Times will deliver a short keynote address, followed by a panel discussion of how state and national news organizations are fighting efforts to curb press freedoms.
