Afternoon session: Editors, technologists get to trade places

Afternoon session, Saturday, May 3: We will break you into two groups, and editors and data specialists will trade places to learn from each other. By using simple HTML and Git, editors will come away with knowledge of both coding and coding workflow works in newsrooms. Data specialists will become editors for a day and learn how to craft a compelling and accurate story. Session leaders: Amanda Krauss, director of technology, The Texas Tribune, and Christian MacDonald, online projects and data editor, the Austin American-Statesman.

The Hacking News Leadership conference May 3-4 at the University of Texas at Austin's Belo Center for New Media is close to selling out! If you're planning to attend the conference, then register as soon as possible before space fills up.

Because of the popularity, the block of rooms we reserved at the Hampton Inn & Suites @ The University of Texas/Capitol is sold out. You still might try the Hampton Inn, but be prepared to use your favorite search engine to seek out more hotel options in the Austin area near campus.

Hacking News Leadership will bring together people who do the hiring, budgeting and strategizing for news organizations to work with skilled developers, designers and data specialists on the following questions:

  • What should newsrooms do to fully tap the power of data and technology? What are some easy technology tools editors and digital gurus can share in the newsroom?

  • How do editors hire and compete for a limited pool of highly skilled data journalists?

  • How can news leaders and technology specialists forge a successful partnership? How can they join forces to hack the future?

Key sponsors include the University of Texas at Austin, The Texas Tribune, the Austin American-Statesman, Digital First Media, Google, Scripps Howard Foundation and the Houston Chronicle.
