ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A personalized and flexible multi-year training alliance, aimed at consistently meeting the rapidly changing needs of news organizations, was announced Wednesday by The Poynter Institute and the American Society of News Editors.
The training, delivered through Poynter's News University interactive online learning platform, will feature four webinars, created by Poynter in collaboration with ASNE leadership.
"ASNE and Poynter are organizations committed to helping newsroom leaders better serve their audiences and achieve journalistic excellence," said Tim Franklin, president of The Poynter Institute. "This new training partnership will give ASNE members free access to a series of useful and highly relevant webinars from the world's premier journalism training institute. It's a great, added benefit for ASNE members. At the same time, it allows Poynter to expand the reach of its training with more of the nation's editors, and it makes the institute even more connected with the issues facing newsroom leaders. This is a win for all involved."
Poynter will work with ASNE to ensure the webinars are developed to meet the needs of ASNE members and the challenges of a rapidly changing news and journalism landscape.
"We are committed to providing value for our members, and we are excited to partner with Poynter," said ASNE President David Boardman, dean of the School of Media and Communication at Temple University. "Our organizations have similar goals, and this program will help newsroom leaders meet their challenges with the state-of-art, values-based training for which Poynter is renowned."
These webinars will be free to ASNE members and offered at affordable rates to nonmembers.
Poynter has a long history of creating versatile and timely online journalism training. More than 288,000 registered users in 200 countries have participated in Poynter's News University since its inception in 2005. It has conducted more than 175 webinars and currently offers more than 300 e-learning modules in five languages.
Building upon the e-learning program, Poynter has developed successful training initiatives with universities and media and news organizations, including the McClatchy Company and the American Press Institute.
"This partnership is another example of how Poynter is helping organizations align their training needs and benefit from Poynter's expertise in delivering multiple forms of training; from onsite to online and from group seminars to personal coaching," explained Howard Finberg, director of business development at The Poynter Institute.
In addition to the webinars, Poynter will work with ASNE to aggregate relevant training, plus stories and other information from Poynter's news and information website.
