ASNE Board elects Alfredo Carbajal to leadership ladder

The board of directors of the American Society of News Editors elected a member to the Society's leadership ladder during their Nov. 16 fall board meeting at the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Mo.

Alfredo Carbajal, managing editor of Dallas-based, Spanish-language newspaper Al Día (The Dallas Morning News) will assume the role of treasurer at the Sept. 15-17, 2014, meeting in Chicago when the current officers each advance to the next leadership level. Carbajal will assume the presidency of ASNE during the 2017 annual meeting.
ASNE's leadership is served by President David Boardman (dean of the School of Media and Communication at Temple University), Vice President Chris Peck (associate editor at the Riverton Ranger in Wyoming), Secretary Pam Fine (Knight Chair for News, Leadership and Community at the University of Kansas) and Treasurer Mizell Stewart III (vice president of the newspaper division of the E.W. Scripps Co.).
In the past two years, Carbajal has led the ASNE Minority Leadership Institute, a program that has trained about 60 mid-level news leaders. He is a co-chair of the ASNE Leadership Committee.
Carbajal, who is also part of the News Management Group at The Dallas Morning News, previously worked as editor of the weekly La Prensa, a publication of The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, Calif. He has a journalism degree from the University of Texas at El Paso and was a 2009 fellow at the Punch Sulzberger Executive News Media Program at Columbia University.
The American Society of News Editors focuses on leadership development and journalism-related issues. Founded in 1922 as a nonprofit professional organization, ASNE promotes fair, principled journalism, defends and protects First Amendment rights, and fights for freedom of information and open government. Leadership, innovation, diversity and inclusion in coverage and the journalism work force, youth journalism and the sharing of ideas are also key ASNE initiatives.
