ASNE was thrilled to hold four Minority Leadership Institutes in the past year. We trained more than 60 middle-managers through partnership at a variety of conventions, including UNITY in Las Vegas; ASNE in Washington, D.C.; NABJ in Orlando, Fla.; and EIJ, which included CSPJ, NAHJ and RTDNA, in Ahaheim, Calif.

The Gannett Foundation, API and The Scripps Howard Foundation were generous sponsors. The participants are diverse and come from various media outlets around the nation. They are nominated by their management for their strong leadership qualities, and they all have immediate-impact potential to become leaders in their newsrooms.

As you know, we have conducted the ASNE newsroom census since 1978. We also know we need more than just the census. That's why we created programs, such as the Minority Leadership Institute, to better reflect our increasingly diverse communities and strengthen our journalism, and why we are so proud of it.

We hope to expand and create new partnerships in 2014.
