ASNE vastly expanded the number of news websites that have been invited to participate in the Newsroom Employment Census this year, and last week Robert Niles of the Online Journalism Review encouraged them to stand up to be counted. Niles noted that it's “important for journalists who move into independent online news publishing not to drop off the journalism industry's radar. Accurate data that includes the full range of modern news publications can help counter narratives that journalism is in decline.” Working with its partners at the Center for Advanced Social Research, an affiliate of the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism, ASNE will break out data from online-only newsrooms to help researchers make apples-to-apples comparisons with previous years' data.
