Nancy Barnes: Leading, learning, competing through change

Date: Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011 at noon ET/ 9 PT

Hosts: Melanie Sill, USC Annenberg, and Carole Tarrant, The Roanoke (Va.) Times

Nancy Barnes, Star Tribune (Minneapolis)

Nancy Barnes is editor and senior vice president of the Star Tribune, Minnesota's largest newspaper. In the past five years, the paper was sold by McClatchy to a private equity firm, went into bankruptcy and emerged to reclaim profitability last year, sharing that success with employees through profit-sharing. Since being named editor in 2007, Barnes has unified print and digital news staffs and overseen the implementation of a digital strategy that has included the launch of a new website, a suite of preps sports sites, mobile sites and a new tablet product. She has also bucked trends by helping the paper to increase Sunday circulation. This year, the Star Tribune has been covering two homegrown Republican presidential candidates, churning out significant enterprise and developing a subscription strategy for digital products that will include a metered system that will debut sometime this fall. Minneapolis also is home to MinnPost, one of the first and now most established online local news sites. Join Nancy and #ASNEChat hosts Melanie Sill and Carole Tarrant to talk about leading, learning and competing through change.
