ASNE's effort to ensure access to geographic information system basemaps continues to climb through California's court system. Two weeks ago, the society joined an amicus letter in Sierra Club v. Orange County asking the California Supreme Court to review an appellate court ruling that basemaps, which are used in conjunction with other data to identify geographic trends, are proprietary software. We had joined an amicus brief filed in support of the Sierra Club at the Court of Appeal level; the amicus letter backs the Sierra Club's request that the California Supreme Court hear the case to resolve a conflict between two rulings at the Court of Appeals level.
