Another arrest for covering the police

Another recent incident that has received little public attention involved newspaper veteran John Fearing, who left his position as the executive director of the Arizona Newspapers Association two years ago. On July 2, Fearing was snapping photos and video at the scene of an automobile accident in Richmond, Ind. After a lengthy exchange with a police officer who tried to stop him, Fearing was arrested and charged with obstruction.

Last week we noted several recent instances in which law enforcement officials arrested journalists and other citizens for having the temerity to report on arrests or other police matters that occurred in public. Another recent incident that has received little public attention involved newspaper veteran John Fearing, who left his position as the executive director of the Arizona Newspapers Association two years ago. On July 2, Fearing was snapping photos and video at the scene of an automobile accident in Richmond, Ind. After a lengthy exchange with a police officer who tried to stop him, Fearing was arrested and charged with obstruction. He wrote about the incident and posted video on his Facebook page.
