ASNE supports Anti-SLAPP effort in Congress

The proposed law is similar to those that currently exist in about half the states. Originally introduced in the 111th Congress by Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., we are seeking introduction of the legislation in both Houses of Congress in 2011. ASNE was one of the earliest of more than 100 organizations to formally endorse the bill.
While the federal shield law soaks up most of our attention, a proposed federal "Anti-SLAPP" law would arguably have a greater practical impact on the day-to-day practice of journalism. Relatively few reporters have to choose between protecting a source or going to jail, but every media outlet understands that frivolous defamation claims can have serious financial ramifications, especially when disgruntled subjects are willing to use the legal system to squelch criticism.
