RESTON, Va. - Newspaper newsrooms are increasingly sophisticated in their use of computers, particularly for pagination, but the technology now in place is far from trouble-free, a joint American Society of Newspaper Editors-Society of Newspaper Design survey shows.

RESTON, Va. - Newspaper newsrooms are increasingly sophisticated in their use of computers, particularly for pagination, but the technology now in place is far from trouble-free, a joint American Society of Newspaper Editors-Society of Newspaper Design survey shows.

The survey polled newspapers on their usage and happiness with pagination equipment and their presence and success online. Results were mixed. Of those responding:

  • More than half (57 percent) said they were happy with their pagination systems, but only three of the seven vendors in the survey had more satisfied customers than dissatisfied ones.
  • The vast majority (91 percent) believe their newspapers will be fully paginated in five years while 82 percent believe they will be at least partially paginated within a year.
  • The overwhelming majority used Quark XPress software.
  • Just over half (54 percent) archive photos electronically.
  • Most don't yet offer services on the Internet or an online service. Electronic publishing is generally seen as an "Investment in the future."

Other aspects of the survey concentrated on training issues, structure of copy desks, and tradeoffs between editing and laying out pages.
