WASHINGTON The board of directors of the American Society of Newspaper Editors has passed the following resolution:

The American Society of Newspaper Editors supports the creation of a permanent press freedom advocate at the Organization of American States.  We believe, however, that OAS should not position itself as an intermediary between the press and the public. An OAS role to further press freedom in the hemisphere is needed and welcome.

The directors adopted the resolution at a board meeting preceding the ASNE convention.

Founded in 1922, ASNE is an organization of the main editors of daily newspapers in the United States and Canada.  There are currently 850 members.
