Board plans return to New Orleans in 2014

WASHINGTON -- Gilbert Bailon, publisher and editor, Al Día, Dallas, today was elected president of ASNE, the nation's largest organization of daily newspaper editors.

In the coming year, Bailon says, "ASNE will expedite its efforts to help newsroom leaders with the skills necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing industry that now integrates digital media, new products, new audiences and demographic shifts.

"Our roles as newsroom leaders will continue to transform and, while challenging, will offer opportunities to reach new people with different content delivered across various forms of media. It's not business as usual on the job, nor will it be within ASNE.

"While our board embraces the urgency of needed change, it remains dedicated to preserving the longstanding pillars of quality, credible news content and the obligation to serve the public as watchdogs."

Bailon succeeded David A. Zeeck, executive editor of The News Tribune in Tacoma, Wash., who became an ex officio member of the board when his term expired. Bailon's speechgiven at the closing luncheon is available online.

Other officers elected were Charlotte H. Hall, editor, Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel, vice president; W. Martin Kaiser, editor, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, secretary; Milton Coleman, deputy managing editor, The Washington Post, treasurer.

Six directors were elected to the ASNE board, which is comprised of the four officers, the past president and 15 members.

Members re-elected: Susan Goldberg, executive editor, San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News; Kenneth A. Paulson, editor, USA TODAY, McLean, Va.; and Stanley R. Tiner, executive editor, The Sun Herald, Biloxi, Miss.

Board members continuing on the board: Andrew N. Alexander, Washington bureau chief, Cox Newspapers; Jim Amoss, editor, The Times-Picayune, New Orleans; Caesar Andrews, executive editor, Detroit Free Press; Pamela B. Fine, managing editor, The Indianapolis Star; Mike Jacobs, editor and publisher, Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald; Christopher Peck, editor, The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tenn.; Sharon Rosenhause, managing editor, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Fort Lauderdale; Julia D. Wallace, editor, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution; Janet S. Weaver, executive editor, The Tampa (Fla.) Tribune.

Also at the annual convention, the ASNE board affirmed its support for the people and city of New Orleans with a promise to hold the 2014 gathering there. "The board feels it's important that ASNE plays a role in the rebuilding of New Orleans as a prominent city. We are happy to return to New Orleans, where we held the 2003 convention," Bailon said.

The ASNE board works with 17 committees and the ASNE Foundation to forward the initiatives and goals of the organization, which was founded in 1922.
