RESTON, Va. Google CEO Eric Schmidt will be the opening speaker at ASNE's NewsNow 2010 Ideas Summit in Washington April 11-14.
The conference themes are innovation, collaboration and leadership, and the primary focus will be on providing editors with the tools they need to meet the challenges of electronic media. “If you're a newsroom leader who's looking for ideas and inspiration, NewsNow is the place for you,” said David Boardman, executive editor of The Seattle Times and a convention co-chair. “You will learn from some of the smartest, most innovative people in our business -- especially in the digital realm -- and you'll leave charged up to help move professional journalism forward.”
Schmidt, who has led Google since 2001, will speak prior to the conference's opening reception at the J.W. Marriott in Washington, which is being co-sponsored by the search giant and the Knight Foundation.
This year's ASNE convention also will be notable for the sheer volume and velocity of the programming, and the wide range of speakers and the diversity of their professional backgrounds. Others scheduled to speak during the summit include Alan Rusbridger of The Guardian, David Carr of the New York Times, The Huffington Post leader Arianna Huffington, Yahoo! News honcho Mark Walker, and the editor and author Dave Eggers.
“NewsNow 2010 is going to be a good combination of provocative and practical ,” said Pam Fine, Knight Chair at the University of Kansas and the other convention co-chair. “It's going to focus on the pressing issues that newsroom leaders and journalism educators face today. We've drawn in expertise from some of the best thinkers and doers in journalism to make our general sessions and workshops engaging and valuable.”
Under Schmidt's leadership, Google has scaled up its infrastructure and broadened offerings while maintaining a culture of innovation. During his tenure, the company went public, launched Gmail, Google News, Google Book Search, Google Earth and Google Analytics -- among others products. It also purchased Blogger, DoubleClick and YouTube, all leaders in their spaces.
