ASNE supports the principles of openness and protection of news sources in China. In a letter to Yang Yiechi, Minister of Foreign Affairs for the People's Republic of China, ASNE President Charlotte H. Hall strongly encourages China to continue and expand on the openness established during the Olympic games. A temporary order relaxing press regulations during the Olympic period will expire on Oct. 17.

Writing in support of the Foreign Correspondents Club of China in its request for new regulations, Hall stresses the need for the Chinese government to commit to the protection of news sources, in addition to providing freedom of movement for journalists. The Ietter also includes a request for consideration of specific reforms that have been outlined by the foreign correspondents club.
