The ASNE board began implementing new bylaws and membership structure during its meeting this weekend in Chicago.

The plan will be finetuned and phased in over the next several months.

ASNE members recently voted to become the American Society of News Editors, dropping "newspapers" from its name. In addition, the group voted to open membership to leaders of online news providers and leading journalism educators.

The board usually holds its spring meeting during the convention. It met at the O'Hare Hilton on Saturday and Sunday.

During the meeting, the presidential gavel was passed from Charlotte Hall to Marty Kaiser.
