Webinars, virtual convention get high marks

Nearly 250 editors have sat in on ASNE's virtual convention with a full line-up of sessions scheduled for this week.

Nearly 250 editors have sat in on ASNE's virtual convention with a full line-up of sessions scheduled for this week.

In April, ASNE launched a series of hour-long, online seminars, kind of virtual convention spread over time. Editors can participate at their desktops.

The ASNE webinars help editors build and monetize their digital audience and run their print paper. Editors get practical tips about creating digital content, sharing with other papers, managing user comments, running the continuous digital newsroom, live blogging, mobile delivery, and, of course, using Twitter. Many of the sessions were originally slated for the convention program. The webinars are free to members and $50 for nonmembers.

Three webinars are set for what would have been convention week. Tuesday will feature a live webcast with Lee Abrams of Tribune Company, followed by new research on the continuous news desk on Wednesday and the latest trends in mobile technology on Friday.

Feedback from the webinars has been highly favorable, with 90 percent saying the sessions have met their expectations and kept their attention.

“I generally am leary of webinars, but I found this a good way to hear from key people in the industry without leaving my office,” said Nancy Barnes, editor, the Star (Minneapolis) Tribune.

A total of 12 virtual convention sessions are scheduled, with the possibility of others being added to the lineup. To register, please visit http://asnewebex.com.

The largest webinar attendance to date was the first virtual convention session, “Civilizing Online Comments,” which attracted 70 participants.

ASNE began offering webinars in September. The first session was on “Motivating and Leading for Change.”

The webinars are funded, in part, by the McCormick Foundation. To register, click here.
