Reston, VA -- Scott Bosley, executive director of the American Society of News Editors, will retire at the end of 2009.
ASNE President Martin Kaiser, editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, said Bosley recently informed the officers and board of directors of his plans to step down after more than 10 years in the position. Kaiser said a search committee would soon be named with the goal of selecting a successor and providing time for an orderly transition of leadership.
"Scott has been an outstanding leader, not just of ASNE, but in our industry," said Kaiser. "His tireless dedication to serving journalism during his exceptional career before and while at ASNE, has made all of us better leaders. He will not just be missed by ASNE, but by our profession."
Bosley, a former editor and publisher, came to ASNE in March 1999 after a career of more than 30 years with Knight Ridder newspapers.
"I have enjoyed my time at ASNE immensely," Bosley said. "I will forever carry treasured memories of my associations with ASNE leaders, colleagues and members.
"It simply feels like the right time for me, personally, to step back and explore more of life, taking advantage of the pace that retirement will afford."
Bosley started his professional career as a reporter at the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal and rose to managing editor before moving to the Detroit Free Press where he also served as managing editor. He subsequently served as editor of Knight Ridder Tribune Information Services, editor of The Journal of Commerce and publisher of the Post-Tribune in Gary, Ind.
A graduate of West Virginia University in his native state, Bosley and his wife Carol are the parents of two adult children.
