ASNE unveils 2019 schedule for Emerging Leaders Institutes

Columbia, Mo. (April 17, 2019) - The American Society of News Editors is accepting applications for the four Emerging Leaders Institutes, which will take place in various locations throughout the year, with the goal of training up-and-coming news leaders with diverse backgrounds, and helping them develop core leadership and strategic skills.
Mid-level managers from newsrooms serving all platforms may apply to be considered to attend at one or more locations of their choice.

Dates and locations are:
  • June 7-8 at Loyola University Chicago
  • Aug. 6-7 prior to the NABJ Annual Convention in Miami
  • Sept. 4 at the Excellence in Journalism Conference (NAHJ, SPJ, RTDNA) in San Antonio
  • Sept. 7-8 prior to the NLA (ASNE-APME) Conference in New Orleans
This is the seventh consecutive year ASNE has committed to train the next generation of news leaders. The program will be led by Alfredo Carbajal, managing editor of Al Día at The Dallas Morning News; Manny Garcia, Sr. Director for Standards & Ethics, USA TODAY Network; Robyn Tomlin, executive editor of The News & Observer and McClatchy's Carolinas regional editor, Jill Geisler, Loyola's Bill Plante Chair in Leadership and Media Integrity. Other faculty members include Julie Moos, executive director of the National Press Club Journalism Institute and Mizell Stewart III, vice president of news operations for Gannett and the USA TODAY Network.

"Everybody agrees that American newsrooms need more news leaders coming from underrepresented segments; This institute helps train emerging leaders to guide core values and standards, and promote journalism that accurately reflects a diverse society," Carbajal said. "Furthermore, we want to contribute to the development of  leaders with the appropriate tools to bring innovation and solutions to our newsrooms."

"I love this program." Geisler said. "Those of us who volunteer to teach are determined to enrich the ranks of news leadership by helping women and people of color get there, stay there - and rise."

The institutes will provide leadership and management training for emerging leaders from organizations across all news platforms in the United States. They are tailored to address the most pressing issues for newsroom leaders and the basic skills needed to lead and drive change. Some of the topics on the program include coaching and feedback, leadership style, news values in digital platforms and social media environments, goal-setting and strategy, financial leadership, design-thinking and innovation.

"This program is core to ASNE's mission to help grow the next generation of leaders, and to ensure that our newsrooms' leadership reflect America," said Nancy Barnes, ASNE President.

All institutes are free and will provide some travel reimbursements to participants. Selected candidates will receive an email with information on lodging and how to receive travel reimbursements.

Selected candidates and their supervisors will also be required to complete pre-institute assessment forms before participating in the program.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the American Press Institute, Gannett and McClatchy are generous sponsors of the 2019 Emerging Leaders Institutes.
