Replay of live Legal Hotline available

During our live Legal Hotline on Tuesday, ASNE Legal Counsel Kevin M. Goldberg reviewed some of our more recent advocacy efforts, summarized some trending issues around the country and took questions from viewers.

On the advocacy front, he talked about:
  • ASNE's efforts as a member of the STOPP Coalition fighting against the imposition of tariffs on imported uncoated groundwood paper used in printing
  • Our support for prosecuted journalists Emilio Gutierrez-Soto and Manuel Duran and the Egyptian photojournalist Shawkan
  • Our recent statement in opposition to the Department of Justice's seizure of communications records of New York Times reporter Ali Watkins
  • Our participation on amicus briefs in support of access to Baltimore police records and in opposition to a prior restraint issued against the Los Angeles Times (which has been overturned on appeal - yay!).

The trending issues he identified were in the areas of copyright, newsgathering and Anti-SLAPP. The questions he received and discussed were regarding best practices to employ when requesting records at the state and federal level.

Anyone who was not able to tune in live can replay the video

We'll be back in September with an in-person session at the 2018 ASNE-APME conference to help you understand the legal landscape and best prepare how to respond to actual and potential threats. Come join us from 10:30 to 11:10 a.m.Wednesday, Sept. 12

The Legal Hotline is made possible by generous grants from the Charles Koch Foundation and the Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation.
