Earlier this spring, ASNE announced that it would be joining the STOPP Coalition, a group of associations and companies fighting newsprint tariffs that threaten more than 600,000 jobs across the entire U.S. printing and publishing industry. This was in response to actions at the International Trade Commission and the Department of Commerce, which threatened to raise the costs of printing newspapers. These threats have now turned to reality, as the department has (1) assessed countervailing duties on uncoated groundwood use to make newsprint and (2) released preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian imports of newsprint. Although the commission still has to undertake a final investigation, which includes questionnaires, public comment period and a hearing (likely to occur in August with a final ruling in September), we are already seeing the actual imposition of additional costs at the U.S. Border, costs the newspaper industry simply cannot afford.
ASNE members have started to respond, with a series of well-written articles and editorials that are being catalogued on the STOPP Coalition website. We hope others will, as well. You can take advantage of some new background resources available on that site, including:
- Background information on the tariff issue
- A form letter, which can be used to contact your member of Congress
- A full-page ad and a quarter-page ad that you can run in your print edition, either of which can be modified to include your logo.
