ASNE Emerging Leaders Institutes seeking applicants

ASNE invites mid-level news managers with diverse backgrounds to apply to the 2018 Emerging Leaders Institutes, which will take place in various locations throughout the year.

Dates and locations are:

  • June 8-9 at Loyola University Chicago
  • July 17-18 prior to the NAHJ International Training Conference and Career Fair in Miami
  • July 31-Aug. 1 prior to the NABJ Annual Convention and Career Fair in Detroit
  • Sept. 9-10 prior to the ASNE-APME conference in Austin, Texas

The institutes are tailored to address the most pressing issues for newsroom leaders and the basic skills needed to lead and drive change. Some of the topics on the program include coaching and feedback, leadership style, news values in digital platforms and social media environments, goal-setting and strategy, financial leadership, design-thinking and innovation.

The program will be led by ASNE President Alfredo Carbajal, managing editor of Al Día at The Dallas Morning News, and ASNE Leadership Committee Co-Chairs Manny Garcia, east region executive editor of the USA TODAY Network; Jill Geisler, Loyola's Bill Plante Chair in Leadership and Media Integrity; and Ron Smith, managing editor of news at USA TODAY. Other faculty members include Julie Moos, shared news director at McClatchy, and Mizell Stewart III, vice president of news operations for Gannett and the USA TODAY Network.

All four institutes are free and will provide some travel reimbursements thanks to our generous sponsors, the American Press Institute, the Gannett Foundation and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
