2017 ASNE-APME conference a big success!

#newsleaders2017 was a big success filled with engaging and innovative sessions, as well as interactive discussions and networking! More than 300 people, including speakers, panelists, sponsors and student journalists, attended the 2017 ASNE-APME News Leadership Conference Oct. 8-11 in Washington, D.C.

Opening reception at the Smithsonian's National Zoo

We thank all of you for joining us and making the conference relevant and valuable. Don't worry if you weren't able to attend this year; there is always a next year. Here's a collection of what people were tweeting throughout the conference:

The conference kicked off Sunday, Oct. 8, with two pre-conference workshops, which drew more crowds than ever, and an opening reception at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. The fish feeding demonstration was a big hit, in addition to the delicious hors d'oeuvres. For the next two and a half days, we showcased more than 30 sessions, including two lunch keynotes and the awards presentation, and hosted several networking and learning activities, such as a party at the Australian ambassador's residence and a special briefing at the U.S. Department of State.

ASNE made several announcements during the conference:
Jim Simon
Alfredo Carbaja

In addition, both ASNE and APME installed new presidents, Alfredo Carbajal of Al Dia at The Dallas Morning News, and Jim Simon of Honolulu Civil Beat, respectively, as outgoing presidents Mizell Stewart and Bill Church completed their terms. New board members were elected, as well, for both organizations. Click here to see ASNE's new board members.

Most of the presentations will be posted soon at asne.org. If you'd like to listen to the conversation with Leonard Pitts Jr. of the Miami Herald, then here's the video and script. For more stories, photos and videos from the conference, please visit newsleaders2017.wordpress.com, an online hub featuring the outstanding coverage by a team of student journalists from Ball State University, Howard University and Pennsylvania State University.

In addition to the News Leadership Conference, ASNE's Emerging Leaders Institute Oct. 7-8 received rave reviews from participants! We thank our leadership expert Jill Geisler of Loyola University Chicago and ASNE Leadership Committee Co-Chairs Peter Bhatia of the Detroit Free Press and Ron Smith of the USA TODAY, as well as ASNE President Alfredo Carbajal of Al Dia (The Dallas Morning News), for organizing the program and mentoring an exciting group of emerging news leaders. Also, thanks to the class for their hard work in cultivating their leadership skills.

Finally, we'd like to make several shout-outs to those who made the conference as smooth and successful as possible. We first thank journalism faculty Juli Metzger of Ball State University, Milbert O. Brown of Howard University and John Beale and John Dillon of Pennsylvania State University, as well as all of their student journalists, for covering the conference across all platforms.

We also thank ASNE-APME Conference Program Committee Co-Chairs Mark Russell, executive editor of The Commercial Appeal, and Mark Baldwin, executive editor of the Rockford Register Star, for putting together a terrific program. And, of course, we can't thank enough our speakers, panelists and attendees for sharing their knowledge and experience.

Lastly, our deep appreciation goes to all of our generous sponsors for making the #newsleaders2017 conference possible!
