ASNE trains next generation of news leaders in Chicago

ASNE trained a diverse class of 25 emerging news leaders this past weekend at the Emerging Leaders Institute at Loyola University Chicago. For two days, June 9-10, attendees assessed their strengths and challenges as a leader; learned different aspects of leadership, including things great bosses share, leaders' role in ethics and integrity in the digital age, basics of building and managing a budget and how design thinking helps; discussed how to tackle tough conversations; and set specific goals for becoming a better leader in six months and in one yearClick here to see a slide show of photos from the institute!

The institute was led by journalism leadership experts Jill Geisler, Loyola's Bill Plante Chair in Leadership and Media Integrity; ASNE Vice President Alfredo Carbajal of Al Dia at The Dallas Morning News; ASNE Leadership Committee Co-Chair Peter Bhatia of The Cincinnati Enquirer; and Manny Garcia of Gannett and the USA TODAY Network. Generous sponsors include the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Loyola University Chicago School of Communication and the American Press Institute.

ASNE's second institute of the year will take place Aug. 8-9 at the 2017 National Association of Black Journalists Convention and Career Fair in New Orleans. The training will be free and provide some travel reimbursements. Applications will be open soon.
