Letter to DHS against social media password requirement

ASNE joined 44 other organizations in a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly that opposes any proposals to force those entering the United States to provide login information for social media accounts as a condition of entry into the country. This builds on a statement many of these same groups, including ASNE and about 50 individuals, issued Feb. 21.
The letter not only contains a specific request that the department reject any such proposals, but also elaborates on the rationale for such action. The letter notes that an invasive review might jeopardize our safety and security as U.S. citizens face retaliatory requirements overseas and that there will be a significant intrusion into confidential matters, especially those involving reporter-source relationships, with little beneficial value from such a program given the massive amount of data involved.
