New resource available for Sunshine Week celebration

FOIA and public records tool MuckRock is a new addition to the Sunshine Week Toolkit, a free resource available for use during March 12-18. To help raise the national awareness of open government, MuckRock has compiled public records metrics and guides for every state, including average response times, success rates, average fees and more. Check out data on your state and what documents people have requested. Anyone can use this data for free with proper attribution to MuckRock.

Also available in the Toolkit is the budget for the upcoming reporting package, a collaboration among ASNE, The Associated Press, Associated Press Media Editors, Gannett, McClatchy, The Dallas Morning News and the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Content will be posted next week on the ASNE Sunshine Week page and at sunshineweek.org for anyone to publish beginning March 12.

In addition, opinion columns and editorial cartoons will be added to the Toolkit as we receive them. If you'd like to contribute your work, please send to sunshineweek@asne.org.

Sunshine Week 2017 is made possible by an endowment from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and by a donation from The Gridiron Club and Foundation.

ASNE launched Sunshine Week in 2005 as a national initiative. Since 2012, ASNE has partnered with the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press to provide support for news organizations, libraries, universities, civic groups, nonprofits and others who want to promote open government and access to information.

Follow Sunshine Week on Twitter and Facebook, and use the hashtag #SunshineWeek. Send any celebration plans and events to sunshineweek@asne.org.
