Apply to attend one of three institutes for free training on leadership


Do not wait until the last minute to apply for one of the three ASNE Minority Leadership Institutes. Selected participants will receive free training on newsroom leadership and management. They will also receive travel incentives. Read more for details. 
 
The deadline to apply for the first ASNE Minority Leadership Institute of this year is approaching quickly. Apply by Friday, July 17, to attend the institute at NABJ, which will take place Aug. 6 and 7 in Minneapolis. Deadlines for the other two institutes are in August.

We're looking for 16 mid-level editors and news directors around the country to participate in each institute. Selected participants will receive free leadership and management training on goal-setting, strategies, leadership style, driving diversity, and technology and innovation. They will also receive travel incentives.

See below for more details on each institute and how to apply: 

  • At NABJ: Aug. 6-7 during the NABJ Convention & Career Fair in Minneapolis. Participants will be responsible for making their own travel arrangements. One night of lodging and up to $350 for travel will be reimbursed with valid receipts. Some meals during the training will be provided. Apply by July 17 by email tasne@asne.org with the subject line "ASNE Minority Leadership Institute application-NABJ," and include the following: 
    • A resume
    • A 300-word essay describing the leadership role you play in your organization, including day-to-day managerial duties and why you would benefit from the institute
    • A nomination letter from your supervisor (You must be employed by a news or media organization to be considered.)

  • At NAHJ/RTDNA/SPJ: Sept. 17-18 before the Excellence in Journalism conference in Orlando. Participants will be responsible for making their own travel arrangements. One night of lodging and up to $350 for travel will be reimbursed with valid receipts. Some meals during the training will be provided. Apply by Aug. 7 by email to asne@asne.org with the subject line "ASNE Minority Leadership Institute application-NAHJ/RTDNA/SPJ," and include the following: 
    • A resume
    • A 300-word essay describing the leadership role you play in your organization, including day-to-day managerial duties and why you would benefit from the institute
    • A nomination letter from your supervisor (You must be employed by a news or media organization to be considered.)

  • At ASNE-APME: Oct. 15-16 before the ASNE-APME conference in Palo Alto, California. Arrangements will be made for travel and two nights of lodging, and some meals during the training will be provided. Apply by Aug. 28 by email to asne@asne.org with the subject line "ASNE Minority Leadership Institute application-ASNE-APME," and include the following: 
    • A resume
    • A 300-word essay describing the leadership role you play in your organization, including day-to-day managerial duties and why you would benefit from the institute
    • A nomination letter from your supervisor (You must be employed by a news or media organization to be considered.)
