ASNE is looking for an executive director who can work with top leaders of news organizations and journalism schools around the nation. The office and staff are located on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia, Missouri.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The American Society of News Editors seeks an energetic, thoughtful, well-organized executive director who can work with top leaders of U.S. news organizations at both the local and national levels.
The executive director is responsible for keeping the 400-plus members of ASNE informed about the organization's work and engaged in its key priorities, including advocacy on behalf of the First Amendment and access to public records/open meetings; leadership in the news industry; diversity; and innovation.
The executive director works with the ASNE staff on site at the University of Missouri and with the Reynolds Journalism Institute to ensure that major ASNE projects are on task and that ASNE is working closely with RJI on projects of mutural interest.
In addition, the executive director is responsible for budget oversight and fundraising.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be well grounded in the ethics, function and practices of journalism in the 21st century
- Have a demonstrated record of managing a large professional organization
- Have in interest and willingness to work in partnership with RJI on innovation in journalism and other joint projects
- History of effective interaction with an executive board and/or executives of major companies
- Strong writing, speaking and communication skills
- Working knowledge of fundraising, grant writing and sponsorship requests, including some with RJI
- Experience in planning workshops, conferences and conventions, including some events with RJI
- Comfortable with networking, one-on-one meetings and building relationships with potential funders, donors and new members
- Familiarity with deadlines and how to meet them
- Good at budgeting
