A highlight of next week's "Fast Forward" ASNE-APME conference in Chicago will be a keynote address by James Risen, The New York Times reporter under pressure from the Department of Justice to reveal the identity of a confidential source.

ASNE looks forward to hearing from Risen on Wednesday, and we reiterate our support of him as he asserts the rights that he and other journalists have under the First Amendment. The decision that Risen has made -- that providing information crucial to the public interest outweighs the danger of being prosecuted for contempt for protecting a source -- is not an easy one. But it is the right one.

ASNE supports Risen, just as we have supported other journalists around the country who have protected their confidential sources. Meanwhile, we continue to push for the passage of the Free Flow of Information Act, which would give journalists long-overdue support in the federal courts.
