The American Society of News Editors has provided a spot on its annual convention program for the Dow Jones News Fund's National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year since 1992. This year, ASNE also played an integral part in boosting participation in our college internship programs helping to provide summer jobs for 86 interns.
As the recruiting season for summer 2014 approached, we thought we might struggle to attract media organizations in light of dour predictions about the industry, uncertainty over unpaid internships and the usual budget pressures.
Enter David Boardman, ASNE president and newly installed dean of Temple University's School of Media and Communication. Temple, in Philadelphia, has been home to the Fund's Center for Editing Excellence run by Ed Trayes since 1968. It primarily serves major metropolitan news media in the northeast. Trayes, a former assistant director of the Fund, and Boardman systematically touted the internship programs across the nation, which resulted in several returning media, as well as new partners.

"The Fund is very grateful for this invaluable help," said Richard J. Levine, president of the board of the Fund. "We look forward to strengthening our relationship with ASNE in the future."
Here are just a few examples of how our media partners continue to support DJNF. The New York Times increased its hiring to five copy editors and a sports editor. The New York Times Editing Center in Gainesville also hired two editors, which brings the company's total to eight. The Sacramento Bee came back to the editing program, and 21st Century Media's New Haven Register hired a digital intern. ASNE Treasurer Mizell Stewart III's E.W. Scripps Company hired five interns in Texas, Tennessee and Florida. Other new media partners include the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and the Buffalo News.
