Updates on Sunshine Week 2014, March 16-22

Thanks to many organizations and individuals who have shared their plans to participate in Sunshine Week 2014, March 16-22. The list of participants, as well as the events calendar on sunshineweek.org, is growing quickly. Included are a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing and a Justice Department event. We're also hearing from a lot of you who are doing audits and special reports, which will add to the critical mass.

Continue to let us know how you and your organization are planning to celebrate Sunshine Week 2014 by emailing us at sunshineweek@asne.org. All groups and individuals are welcome to participate and use the resources provided on the Sunshine Week website to mark their open-government efforts. Check the "Toolkit" section frequently to see a growing collection of editorial cartoons and opinion columns for your use at no cost during the week of March 16-22. More are expected to come in this week, including an opinion column about countries that don't have freedom of information.

Another great resource available in the toolkit is "Sunshine on Campus," which links to a page on SchoolJournalism.org, run by ASNE's Youth Journalism Initiative, that provides lesson plans and resources to help high school students and teachers bring Sunshine Week 2014 into their journalism classrooms.

Launched in 2005, Sunshine Week is a national initiative to promote a dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information. Participants have included print, broadcast and digital media outlets; government officials at all levels; schools and universities; nonprofit and civic organizations; libraries and archivists; and individuals interested in the public's right to know. Click here to read more about Sunshine Week.
