We are happy to announce that Jiyoung Won has joined ASNE as our communications coordinator. Her first day was Sept. 9.
Jiyoung says that among her work experience, the internship in 2011-12 at The Associated Press in Seoul, South Korea, stands out. Working as a news assistant for eight months, she learned hands-on journalism and experienced the fast-paced working environment often associated with a wire news service. Her main duties included doing research on North Korea and providing the information to the bureau chief for her extensive coverage on the country, interviewing sources and contributing to stories written by the staff, writing briefs and attending press conferences.
Jiyoung said she would never forget the moment she watched the North Korean state TV's live announcement of late leader Kim Jong Il's death. She said it was probably the most unexpected, shocking moment for everyone in the newsroom. "I stood speechless for about two seconds before I realized what just happened," Jiyoung said. "Then I heard my editor calling New York and shouting on the phone, 'File, file, Kim Jong Il is dead.' I've never seen anything more urgent than that; I would say it was more than breaking news. Every news organization was reporting about it within seconds."
Before joining ASNE, Jiyoung was a page designer for the Columbia Missourian, a daily community newspaper produced by students of the Missouri School of Journalism under the guidance of professional faculty. There she designed both front and inside pages of news and sports sections, laying out pages with typography, photos and other art elements. With experience in news design that often involved not only creative thinking, but also effective communication and news judgment, she said she is looking forward to bringing her skills to ASNE and working with others as a team. "I'm very excited about this opportunity to perform a variety of journalistic activities like writing, editing, design and PR," she said. "I'm thrilled I get to do a little bit of everything, and I hope to gain valuable work experience."
Jiyoung graduated top of her class from the journalism school in May. During her study, she also had the opportunities to be a reporter and a copy editor at the Missourian. Originally from Seoul, she loves traveling to foreign countries and learning about different cultures. Jiyoung can be reached at 573-882-2430 and at jwon@asne.org.
