New report released on U.S. newspaper industry

In 2012, circulation revenue increased for the first time in nearly a decade.

The Newspaper Association of America published a report entitled The American Newspaper Media Industry Revenue Profile 2012 earlier this week. The report states that although total 2012 revenue was down 2 percent from 2011, circulation revenue increased by 5 percent, the first gain since 2003.

Other findings include:
  • In 2012, digital-only circulation revenue grew 275 percent, and bundled print and digital circulation grew 499 percent.
  • Print-only circulation revenue decreased by 14 percent.
  • Mobile advertising revenue doubled between 2011 and 2012.
