ASNE and APME protest potential FOIA exemption for SNAP data

The American Society of News Editors (“ASNE”) and Associated Press Media Editors (“APME”) sent a joint letter to Chairman Pat Roberts, Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow and members of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry requesting removal of a FOIA exemption from two bills being considered in conference committee this week after differing versions passed the House and Senate. The specific bills in question are HR 2 (commonly referred to as the “Farm Bill”) and HR 6147 (the appropriations bill for the Department of Agriculture). The proposed FOIA exemptions would bar disclosure of data relating to retailers participating in the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (“SNAP”).

2018 ASNE-APME conference a big success

ASNE joins #DefendPressFreedom campaign

Press freedom is one of the most essential components of a democracy, and yet it is witnessing a drastic decline here in the United States. That's why ASNE is joining a coalition of partners led by Reporters Without Borders to launch the #DefendPressFreedom campaign ahead of the midterm elections in November. We must remind our congressional candidates that journalists play a crucial role in our democracy by keeping us informed and holding those in power accountable. Find out more, get involved and help us #DefendPressFreedom!

ASNE, others urge news organizations to fill out 2018 diversity survey by Oct. 12

News organizations that have not participated in the 2018 ASNE diversity survey have until Oct. 12 to submit their data. This deadline extension, announced during the ASNE-APME conference last week, is to drive greater participation in the survey so we can provide an accurate analysis of the current state of diversity in U.S. newsrooms. With only 234 out of nearly 1,700 newspapers and digital media outlets that filled out this year's survey, we can't share the results until we collect more data that we can say is representative of the contemporary media landscape.

ASNE postpones 2018 diversity survey results to seek more participation

Austin, Texas (Sept. 12, 2018) - The American Society of News Editors announced today at the annual News Leadership Conference that it will delay releasing the results of the 2018 Newsroom Employment Diversity Survey to drive greater participation.
Only 234 out of nearly 1,700 newspapers and digital media outlets submitted data for this year's survey. The resulting response rate of less than 14 percent means that data collected thus far could not be interpreted as representative of the contemporary media landscape. ASNE will continue to collect data for another 30 days until Oct. 12.
