Department of Labor announces "listening tour" regarding overtime pay


The Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division has announced a series of “listening sessions” regarding various issues under the Fair Labor Standards Act.  This comes on the heels of changes to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act promulgated by the Obama Administration but reversed by the Trump Administration before they went into effect.  The most controversial of these was an increase in the minimum threshold required for an employee to be considered “exempt” from receiving overtime pay when he or she works in excess of 40 hours in a workweek.  That change would have increased the minimum threshold – one of several factors involved in differentiating between an exempt and non-exempt employee – from $ 23,660 to $ 47,476.

International Trade Commission reverses newsprint tariffs

The entire newspaper industry received a welcome boost Wednesday when the International Trade Commission (ITC) announced that it has overturned the tariffs initially imposed on the importation of uncoated groundwood paper. All five ITC Commissioners agreed that importation of this paper from Canada does not injure U.S. paper mills despite the concerns of one such mill, NORPAC, located in the Pacific Northwest, that initiated this action before the ITC and the Department of Commerce.

Don't forget to vote on 2018-19 ASNE board candidates

The slate of candidates for election to the 2018-19 ASNE Board of Directors is set forth below. This will be a more streamlined election due to the pending merger with APME. As the candidates below are likely to serve for only one year until the merger is complete (though they are technically being elected to three-year terms) and the nominating committee was only able to identify a list of candidates equal in number to openings on the board, they are being presented as a slate for approval by the membership. When the merger completes, there will be a new election to create the Board of Directors of the new organization.

ASNE-APME merger agreement and plan

As we mentioned last week, the ASNE Board of Directors voted unanimously on a proposed plan to merge ASNE and APME into a new news leadership organization committed to defending and speaking on behalf of journalism.
 
The next step in this process is approval by the requisite number of ASNE members at our annual business meeting that will be held at the ASNE-APME conference.
