ASNE's first Emerging Leaders Institute of 2018 will take place June 8-9 at Loyola University Chicago. Apply by May 1 to be considered for this competitive leadership and management training, which has no attendance fee and provides up to $500 of travel reimbursements. The institute is open to mid-level managers with diverse backgrounds, from all news platforms.

Resources available for those who want to speak out against newsprint tariffs

Earlier this spring, ASNE announced that it would be joining the STOPP Coalition, a group of associations and companies fighting newsprint tariffs that threaten more than 600,000 jobs across the entire U.S. printing and publishing industry. This was in response to actions at the International Trade Commission and the Department of Commerce, which threatened to raise the costs of printing newspapers. These threats have now turned to reality, as the department has (1) assessed countervailing duties on uncoated groundwood use to make newsprint and (2) released preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian imports of newsprint. Although the commission still has to undertake a final investigation, which includes questionnaires, public comment period and a hearing (likely to occur in August with a final ruling in September), we are already seeing the actual imposition of additional costs at the U.S. Border, costs the newspaper industry simply cannot afford.
