ASNE supports new bill allowing news outlets to negotiate with tech platforms

ASNE applauds Representative David Cicilline (D-R.I.) for introducing the "Journalism Competition and Preservation Act." We are proud to endorse this legislation that will allow news organizations to collectively and competitively negotiate with platforms to address the way news is ranked, presented and distributed. We support this bill because online platforms’ current control over access to content by billions of users effectively forces news media to restrict – or at least modify – the way it presents that content.

Reporting package now available to ASNE, AP members

One way to get involved in Sunshine Week 2018 and join the weeklong celebration of public access to information, which begins Sunday, March 11, is publishing and distributing the special reporting package, produced by ASNE, The Associated Press and the Associated Press Media Editors. Most of the contents are now available on the AP wire and on the ASNE Sunshine Week page for members only (log in required). The Sunshine Week website will also release the package Sunday, March 11All of the materials, free for anyone and everyone during Sunshine Week, are embargoed for use in print editions of Sunday and online beginning 3:01 a.m. EDT Sunday

ASNE partners with UVA to invigorate diversity survey

In case you missed it, ASNE announced Feb. 27 its new partnership with the University of Virginia on expanding this year's diversity survey to better understand newsroom diversity efforts and challenges. The revamp of the survey will bring a deeper data-driven focus to measure the status of diversity in staffing in U.S. print and online publications. Meredith Clark, a professor at the university's Department of Media Studies, and her research team are leading the project, with the help of a $300,000 grant from the Democracy Fund. The Google News Lab and Knight Foundation are also contributing to the project. Click here to read the entire announcement.
