ASNE argues for First Amendment right to record police

ASNE joined 62 other media organizations and companies in an amicus brief, which asks the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit to hold, for the first time, that there is a First Amendment-based right to record the activities of the police.

Sunshine Week 2017, another resounding success!

This year's celebration of open government and freedom of information, under the administration of ASNE and with support from the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, came to a successful closure Saturday, March 18. Hundreds of individuals and organizations participated and created a buzz on social media that shared the sunshine everywhere in the nation. Thanks for all your time and efforts!

Letter to DHS against social media password requirement

​ASNE joined 44 other organizations in a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly that opposes any proposals to force those entering the United States to provide login information for social media accounts as a condition of entry into the country. This builds on a statement many of these same groups, including ASNE and about 50 individuals, issued Feb. 21.

Happy Sunshine Week, everyone! It's off to a great start as numerous organizations created a robust coverage in their Sunday and Monday editions by publishing their local stories, as well as the content from our special reporting package. Stories, columns and editorial cartoons from the package appeared on at least 54 front pages and more than 150 places online. Let's keep up the good work in celebrating the positive impact of open government and access to public information!
