Sharpen your news leadership skills at ASNE Emerging Leaders Institute Aug. 2-3

Apply by Tuesday, July 12, for the ASNE Emerging Leaders Institute Aug. 2-3 at the 2016 NABJ/NAHJ Joint Convention and Career Fair in the District of Columbia! Travel reimbursements of up to $600 per participant are available after the institute. 

For two days, the institute will provide leadership and management training for new and mid-level minority news leaders from organizations across all platforms around the country. It is tailored to address the most pressing issues for leaders and the basic skills needed to lead and drive change. Some of the topics on the program include coaching and feedback, leadership style, driving diversity in news platforms, goal-setting and strategy, financial leadership, and technology and innovation.

Investigative reporter David Armstrong wins 2016 Barry Bingham Sr. Fellowship from AOJ Foundation

St. Petersburg, Fla. (June 28, 2016) - David G. Armstrong, a Georgia State University professor who trains student journalists in investigative reporting as director of the Georgia News Lab, is the recipient of the 2016 Barry Bingham Sr. Fellowship, the Association of Opinion Journalists Foundation announced today.

ASNE brings Emerging Leaders Institute to 2016 NABJ/NAHJ Convention

Apply now for the ASNE Emerging Leaders Institute Aug. 2-3 at the 2016 NABJ/NAHJ Joint Convention and Career Fair in the District of Columbia. The goal of this institute is to train up-and-coming minority news leaders and help them succeed in their leadership roles.

This is the second institute of the three that ASNE is hosting in 2016 to help train the next generation of news leaders. The first institute trained 24 participants two weeks ago at Loyola University Chicago. ASNE will host one more institute on Sept. 10-11 at the ASNE-APME News Leadership Conference in Philadelphia. More information will be available soon.

Amicus brief against Department of Justice's refusal to release records

Revelations in 2013 that the Department of Justice had subpoenaed the telephone records of more than 100 Associated Press reporters (and also sought email records of Fox News reporter James Rosen) led to a major outcry among media companies and organizations, as well as the public, and resulted in a series of meetings between media and the DOJ to discuss necessary improvements to voluntary DOJ guidelines regarding subpoenas issued to and about the media, which were originally created in 1970. By 2014, we had stronger, but still voluntary, guidelines.

FOIA reform bill, S 337, passes the House of Representatives

We are extremely happy to report that the House of Representatives passed S 337, the FOIA Improvement Act of 2016, by unanimous voice vote Monday, June 13. House passage of S 337, which also received unanimous support in the Senate, means that the FOIA reform we've been fighting for throughout the past five or so years will be a reality once S 337 is signed by President Obama.
