ASNE and the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland are hosting the Cybersecurity for Editors workshop June 3-4. It will be a one-of-a-kind learning experience, with sessions featuring various experts, from former intelligence officers to a lawyer and a research scholar. ASNE joins brief arguing for immediate access to California court filings

ASNE joined 12 media organizations in a brief drafted by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press that challenges a California court's policy of not making court filings publicly available for several days after their submission.

Fill out survey to help Trust Project make journalism stand out

In its preliminary user research, the project has identified a set of potential indicators that signal trustworthiness. It is requesting the help of ASNE members to refine these indicators by responding to a survey about their organization's mission, values and practices. ASNE members who respond by Monday, March 28, will be provided an advance copy of the resulting report and entered into a lottery for either a $100 gift card or a $75 gift card.

ASNE board elects Mike Oreskes to leadership ladder

We're happy to announce that Mike Oreskes, senior vice president of news and editorial director at NPR, was elected to the ASNE leadership ladder during the organization's March 17 spring board meeting. He will assume the role of treasurer at the September conference in Philadelphia when the current officers each advance to the next leadership level. Oreskes will assume the presidency of ASNE during the 2019 annual meeting.

Sunshine Week 2016, the 11th anniversary, keeps shining and shining with hundreds of participants fighting for open government and freedom of information. Thanks for producing, publishing and promoting magnificent work and organizing and hosting various events to raise awareness of this important nationwide initiative.
A quick Google search brings up uncountable Sunshine Week news entries from numerous media organizations around the nation. If you've been following the #SunshineWeek hashtag on social media, then you'll know what we mean by "uncountable"! Here are just some stories and opinion pieces, including the uplifting news about the Senate's passing of the FOIA Improvement Act of 2016 by unanimous consent Tuesday, March 15.
