ASNE's effort in protecting freedom of press

While the letter ASNE and 37 other media organizations and companies sent to the White House in protest of reduced photo and video access to the White House has garnered a significant amount of attention, ASNE continues to be active on other free press issues. This month we joined two amicus briefs designed to protect the rights of reporters throughout the country.

WASHINGTON — Dozens of leading news organizations protested to the White House on Thursday against restrictions that sometimes keep journalists from taking pictures and video of President Barack Obama performing official duties. At the same time, two press groups urged their members to stop using official photos and video handed out by the White House, dismissing them as little more than "government propaganda."

A coalition of press organizations, including ASNE and APME, delivered the following letter to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney on Nov. 21 as a way to protest the limits on access currently barring photographers who cover the White house.

The board of directors of the American Society of News Editors elected a member to the Society's leadership ladder during their Nov. 16 fall board meeting at the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Mo.
Chicago Tribune to sponsor ASNE writing award named for Mike Royko

The American Society of News Editors announced Friday that the Chicago Tribune will sponsor an ASNE writing award for commentary/column writing in memory of legendary Chicago columnist Mike Royko.
The Mike Royko ASNE Award for Commentary/Column Writing will recognize excellence in writing by an individual that expresses a personal point of view. Entries may include columns, blogs and other journalistic forms of opinion but not editorials. The winner will receive $2,500.
ASNE's Youth Journalism Initiative website attracts record numbers of visitors

Weekly visitors to ASNE's Youth Journalism Initiative website, SchoolJournalism.org, increased to more than 18,000 last week. Since it launched on Oct. 7, SchoolJournalism.org has attracted nearly twice as many visitors as the former website.
