ASNE welcomes new staff member


We are happy to announce that Jiyoung Won has joined ASNE as our communications coordinator. Her first day was Sept. 9.

 

Jiyoung says that among her work experience, the internship in 2011-12 at The Associated Press in Seoul, South Korea, stands out. Working as a news assistant for eight months, she learned hands-on journalism and experienced the fast-paced working environment often associated with a wire news service. Her main duties included doing research on North Korea and providing the information to the bureau chief for her extensive coverage on the country, interviewing sources and contributing to stories written by the staff, writing briefs and attending press conferences.

ASNE signs on to five amicus briefs, one set of comments


Overshadowed by the exciting news that S 987, the Free Flow of Information Act, passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 12 is the fact that ASNE signed on to five amicus briefs in various federal court cases and one set of comments filed with the Department of Health and Human Services in the past two weeks. S 987, Free Flow of Information Act, passed by Senate Judiciary Committee


By now you hopefully have heard the very encouraging news that the Senate Judiciary Committee passed S 987, the Free Flow of Information Act. Perhaps you've seen the statement by ASNE President David Boardman commending the Judiciary Committee on its vote. From our perspective, the vote could scarcely have gone better, as the one amendment put forth in the Sept. 12 markup session involved the already brokered compromise on the definition of a covered party that can invoke the bill. 

 

But this is no time to rest on our laurels. We've actually reached this point -- passage of a potential federal shield law by the Senate Judiciary Committee -- once before. It's time to enter uncharted territory by actually getting this bill to the Senate floor. Again, we turn to you for help.

ASNE praises Senate committee for passing Free Flow of Information Act


The following statement is from ASNE President David Boardman, the dean of the School of Media and Communication at Temple University.  

 

Columbia, Mo -- The American Society of News Editors commends the Senate Judiciary Committee for passing S 987, the Free Flow of Information Act, on Thursday, Sept. 12, by a 13-5 vote. Thursday's favorable vote by the committee is the product of incredible effort, dedication and compromise by all those involved: both senators on the committee, Senate leadership and media organizations, and companies seeking a federal reporter's privilege.

Minority Leadership Institutes

ASNE was thrilled to hold four Minority Leadership Institutes in the past year. We trained more than 60 middle-managers through partnership at a variety of conventions, including UNITY in Las Vegas; ASNE in Washington, D.C.; NABJ in Orlando, Fla.; and EIJ, which included CSPJ, NAHJ and RTDNA, in Ahaheim, Calif..
